Tournament Format

The top eight teams in the conference standings will qualify for the GNAC Baseball Championship Tournament.

The eight teams will be split into two double-elimination pods. Pod A will be the #1 seed, #4 seed, #5 seed, and #8 seed. Pod B will be the #2 seed, #3 seed, #6 seed, #7 seed.

Pod Play – Friday, May 2 (at #1 and #2 seeds)

Game 1A – #8 seed at #1 seed, Game 1B – #7 seed at #2 seed
Game 2A - #5 seed vs. #4 seed (at #1 seed), Game 2B - #6 seed vs. #3 seed (at #2 seed)

The NCAA ten-rule rule in the GNAC Championship Tournament for non- championship games (Games 1-5 of Pod Play). (Adopted May 2024)

Seeding and Tiebreaking Criteria

Teams are seeded based on the regular season standings. (Adopted August 25, 2005) Ties for seeding will be broken by the following sequential criteria:

Number of conference wins
Conference head-to-head results*
Results vs. highest-ranked conference teams
Results vs. common opponents
Overall winning percentage (total season play)
Coin toss

* Note: If more than two teams are tied, head-to-head will refer to the team’s combined conference record against all other teams involved in the tiebreaker.

If more than two teams are tied, seeding will be determined by separating the highest-ranked team first (Adopted Aug. 2016). The tiebreaking criteria will then be applied to the two remaining teams from the beginning. This process continues until all seeds are finalized. The Commissioner will make the final determination on any seeding issues.

If a pod cannot be completed by end of day Tuesday, the below format will be used to determine the team advancing to the Championship Series (Adopted April 2024).

• 0 games played Highest seed

• 1 game played Highest seed

• 2 games played Highest undefeated seed

• 3 games played Highest undefeated seed

• 4 games played Highest undefeated seed

• 5 games played Highest undefeated seed

• 6 games played Winner of Game 6 unless each team has one loss (i.e., the teams are tied), then:

• Head-to-head results in the GNAC Tournament

• Highest remaining seed

If the GNAC Championship Series cannot be completed by the NCAA Selection date, the below format will be used to determine the softball automatic qualifier (Adopted March 2024):

• 0 games played Higher seed

• 1 game played Winner of Game 1

• 2 games played Higher seed (i.e. teams are tied)

Tiebreaking Criteria for Determination of Championship Final Host

The highest remaining seed shall host the conference final. If the championship features teams that have the same seed (e.g. #1N vs. #1S), ties will be broken by the following sequential criteria:

Head-to-head result in conference games
Record vs. common conference opponents
Number of division wins
Regular season conference goal differential capped at 6
Results vs. common non-conference opponents
Coin Toss

All-Tournament Team

Twelve individuals will be selected. Coaches will choose the player(s) from their own team to be selected. The number of selections each team is allowed is as follows:

Champion – 4 players

Runner-up –3 players

Other two semifinalists – 2 players each

Tournament Most Valuable Player – 1 player

Host Site Administrator is responsible for contacting the other two semifinalists’ teams for their All-Tournament representative prior to the championship.
