JWU Grabs Top Seed in Upcoming 2025 Baseball Tournament
WINTHROP, Mass. – Johnson & Wales finished the regular season atop of the conference standings to clinch the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Great North Athletic Conference (GNAC) Baseball Championship Tournament. The Wildcats went 14-2 in GNAC play (23-13 overall) this year to secure the right to host one of two four-team double-elimination pods in the tournament.
Joining JWU as a pod host is defending GNAC Champion Mitchell, which went 13-3 in GNAC play (22-16 overall) this year to earn the No. 2 seed in this year's bracket. Both squads will host three other teams from Friday, May 2 to Sunday, May 4 in a double-elimination format to determine the two participants in the 2025 GNAC Baseball Championship Series.
Heading to Providence, RI. for Pod A play will be No. 4 seed University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) (10-6 GNAC, 23-16 overall), No. 5 seed Saint Joseph’s (Maine) (9-7 GNAC, 20-17 overall), and No. 8 seed Colby-Sawyer (7-9 GNAC, 13-24 overall). Meanwhile, the Mariners will welcome No. 3 seed Lasell (11-5 GNAC, 23-13 overall), No. 6 seed Rivier (9-7 GNAC, 14-17 overall), and No. 7 seed Anna Maria (7-9 GNAC, 18-19 overall) to Pod B in New London, CT.
There were four ties in the standings that required the conference's tiebreaking procedure to determine seeding. First, Saint Joe’s Maine and Rivier both finished with 9-7 conference records. The deadlock was broken in the third step of the tiebreaker, which was results vs highest ranked teams as the Monks defeated the higher seeded Mariners (#2) despite the Raiders defeating the no. 3 Lasers, granting SJC the 5th seed.
Further down in the standings, Anna Maria and Colby-Sawyer compiled 7-9 records. The Amcats emerged as the highest seed among the two based on head-to-head conference results in which Anna Maria defeated the Chargers in a 10-6 conference victory on April 15th.
Both pods will feature two games on Friday with action starting at 11 a.m. at Mitchell and noon at JWU. Day two of Pod Play has three games scheduled for Saturday, May 3 with the Pod Finals scheduled for Sunday, May 4. The two teams advancing out their respective pods will meet for a best-of-three GNAC Baseball Championship Series. The Championship Series begins on Thursday, May 8 with game two and the "if necessary" game scheduled for Friday, May 9.
The winner of the GNAC Championship Series earned the title of 2025 GNAC Baseball Champion and will earn the league's automatic qualifier into the 2025 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship.
