INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After winning the GNAC Tournament on Saturday, the Johnson & Wales University women's volleyball team learned its first round NCAA Tournament opponent on Monday. The Wildcats play UMass Boston in Friday's opening round.
The Wildcats and Beacons square off at 5:30 p.m. Tufts University will serve as the host site for the eight-team regional.
Johnson & Wales, the only undefeated volleyball team in the country at any of the three NCAA levels, earned the GNAC's automatic bid by beating Rivier, 3-1, in the conference finals. It's the eighth appearance in the Big Dance for the Wildcats, but they have yet to get out of the first round. Last year, JWU dropped a 3-0 decision to Amherst.
Friday is the fifth meeting between the Wildcats and Beacons. UMass Boston has won all four of the previous games. The last match-up was a 3-0 Beacons win on September 22, 2011, in Boston.
JWU comes into the tournament with a perfect 33-0 record. The Wildcats have only dropped two sets all year, both to Rivier. Johnson & Wales leads the country with a .300 hitting percentage and is second in opponent hitting percentage at .049.
