PROVIDENCE, R.I. – History continued for the Johnson & Wales University men's soccer team on Saturday, as freshman Teagan Drake scored the only goal of the game in the 79th minute to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win over Albertus Magnus College and their third straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship.
Records:
Johnson & Wales: 17-4
Albertus Magnus: 11-9
Goalkeepers:
JWU: Nick Tolman, 3 Saves, 0 Goals; Record: 14-4
AMC: Griffin Volta: 4 Saves, 1 Goal; Record: 8-6
JWU Statistical Leaders:
Teagan Drake: 1 Goal, 2 Shots on Goal
Tucker MacPherson: 1 Assist
Byron Arboleda: 2 Shots on Goal
The Lead:
Goals were at a premium as a steady 15 mph wind at the Scotts Miracle Gro Athletic Complex made it difficult for the team battling the wind to set up their offense. With the wind at their back, the Wildcats had 14 of their 21 shots in the second half, including the game-winner from Drake (Waterbury, Vt.) as he ripped a shot from 15 yards out after taking the pass from MacPherson (Raymond, NH).
Of Note:
The Wildcats have been unbeatable at home as they ran their home-winning streak against GNAC opponents to 21 games and are 21-0-1 at home versus conference opponents since the facility was built prior to the 2013 season. Johnson & Wales also ran its school-record winning streak to 12 matches.
Johnson & Wales has not given up a goal in its last six GNAC Tournament games, dating back to the 2013 tournament championships game. Senior goalkeeper Nick Tolman (Poughkeepsie, NY) posted his ninth shutout of the year. He did not give up a goal to a GNAC opponent in the last 419.29 dating back to the first half of the Anna Maria match.
The rookie Drake is finding his offensive stride at the right time. He has scored half of his six goals in the last three games. The tally against the Falcons was his first game-winning goal of the season.
The assist on Drake's goal gave his classmate MacPherson a point in four-straight matches and eight of his last nine. He leads the GNAC with 36 points, the most by a Wildcat since Bryan Supple recorded 37 in 2005.

Coachspeak:
"It was a typical tournament final game between two competitive teams. There was a tactical element because of a pretty strong wind and I thought if we could get to the second half still at zeros we would find a way to break it open in the second half. We had a couple of shots that were close then Teagan hit a tremendous shot to win the game." -JWU head coach Dave Kulik
Next Game:
The Wildcats will find out their NCAA Tournamennt first-round opponent when the bracket is released on Monday.
