ALLSTON, Mass. – On Sunday, Sept. 24, Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) student-athletes from seven teams showed in numbers for the 21st annual Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race in Allston.
Emmanuel women's basketball, cross country, and track & field, Lasell cross country and track & field, Regis men's basketball, and Simmons women's soccer volunteered at the event, assisting with registration, water stations and mile markers, and helped at the start and finish line. They also assisted in meeting community members and allowing them to share what the road race and Brian Honan mean to the community with two members of the GNAC SAAC Commissioner's Council – Mitchell's Emily Reynolds and Regis' Kristin Barrett.
GNAC staff, Commissioner Joe Walsh, and Elms Commissioner's Council member Clement Kimani were also on site to support the cause.
The Brian J. Honan 5K is commemorative road race, honoring former councilman Brian Honan and his dedication to the community. The former teacher, and basketball referee continued his passion for helping the community and athletics as a councilman in Allston-Brighton. In this role, he found another passion for affordable housing, noting it as an important part of bettering one's life. Unfortunately, Honan passed away in 2002 from complications of cancer surgery.
The Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund was created to help support the causes Brian worked closely with during his career, including education, healthcare, housing, and recreation.
The GNAC has strong values of sportsmanship, integrity, and community and continues to show them through volunteering in the community, returning to the Brian Honan 5K year after year.
Just under 650 runners completed the race this year, you can find a fill list of results on Racewire.
