WESTON, Mass. – Thanks to a strong combination of academic and athletic excellence, Sal Madera (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Santiago Pedraza Novak (Bogota, Colombia), student-athletes from the Regis College men's soccer program, have been selected to the Academic All-District® Men's Soccer Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), announced Thursday by the national organization.
Madera and Pedraza Novak are the first male student-athletes from Regis College to earn Academic All-District® recognition as well as the first Regis student-athletes from any sport to pick up the honor in at least 20 years. They are two of 12 student-athletes representing Division III programs in Massachusetts and Maine to be named within District 1.
Madera continues to add to his award collection, as he received the Male Senior Scholar-Athlete Award from the Regis athletics department. During his Pride career, Madera started 46 of the 51 matches he appeared in, helping the squad qualify for the GNAC Tournament in both 2017 and 2018. As a member of the Regis backline, he was part of nine shutouts during his collegiate career, including three 1-0 shutouts during the 2018 season. Madera graduated with his bachelor's degree in cybersecurity and posted a 3.855 grade point average.
Pedraza Novak entered the lineup right away as a freshman in 2019, earning the start in the season opener against Lesley and taking five shots. He picked up his first career collegiate point with an assist during Regis's 4-0 victory at Anna Maria, and he followed four days later with his initial collegiate goal at Albertus Magnus. During 2020-21, he served as the inclusive excellence representative on the Regis Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and he was named a Pillar of the Regis Community. Pedraza Novak currently maintains a 3.812 GPA as a biology/pre-med major and was also a member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) SAAC Commissioner's Council.
Madera and Pedraza Novak advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, to be voted on by the CoSIDA membership. First-, second-, and third-team Academic All-America® honorees for Division III will be announced Wednesday, July 7.
