STANDISH, ME – Members of the Saint Joseph's College women's soccer team volunteered their time to help Mercy Hospital's Oncology Hematology Center acknowledge, celebrate, and honor cancer survivors and their caregivers' at the 2nd Annual Mercy Hospital Cancer Survivor Celebration on Friday September 28. The experience has touched the lives of not only those being celebrated, but also the St. Joe's players and coaches who gave their time last week.
"I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to volunteer at the Cancer Survivor Celebration Event," adds senior captain Casey Monaghan (Portland, Maine). "It was inspiring to see so many survivors, families, friends, and caregivers come together to celebrate life. Many of these people may not have even known one another, but they were all brought together by strength, hope and perseverance. These qualities exhibited by the survivors and supporters are qualities that are essential to be a successful student and teammate here at Saint Joseph's."
"Cancer touches the lives of so many individuals, and we are just so thankful that we were given the opportunity to help out with such an amazing event," says Head Coach Michael Bolanz '00. "I think it is such a rewarding opportunity for our players, especially our Nursing majors who someday might be working with cancer patients and cancer survivors. They will have already experienced a great appreciation for what they are doing, why they are doing it, and most importantly who they are doing it for."
