Allston, Mass. - This past Sunday was a special day for many member of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference. The Emerson College baseball team, Simmons College cross country & women's basketball teams, Emmanuel College women's basketball team and the Lasell College volleyball & softball teams volunteered for the Brian J. Honan 5 K race in Allston.
It was a tremendous showing by the GNAC as over 150 student athletes gave back to community and helped out the event by assisting with registration, working water stations at mile markers, handing out medals and water after the race and cleaning up/breaking down the event. Their efforts helped make the Honan 5K a memorable experience to all those that participated and a huge success.
The Honan 5K was founded in memory of Boston city councilman Brian J. Honan, who passed away in 2002 from complications linked to cancer surgery. Proceeds from the race go toward the Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund, which supports a number of causes, including youth education. Massachusetts congressman Kevin G. Honan, the brother of Brian J. Honan, said that this year's race attracted approximately 1,200 runners, the largest number in the race's history.
Along with the many GNAC volunteers, several GNAC student-athletes and coaches also ran in the race including Emmanuel College Assistant Cross Country coach Bryan Mahoney. Mahoney finished in third place overall with a time of 15:59, running at a 5:08 mile pace.
Congratulations to all involved on another great day!
