Men's Soccer Remembers Those in September 11th Tragedy
Prior to their match on Saturday, September 11th, the members of the Johnson & Wales and Rivier men’s soccer teams decided together to honor those who were killed in the 2001 September 11th tragedy and those who served in the war in Iraq.
Prior to their match on Saturday, September 11th, the members of the Johnson & Wales and Rivier men’s soccer teams decided to together honor those who were killed in the 2001 September 11th tragedy and those who served in the war in Iraq.
As was the case throughout the GNAC, a moment of silence was observed before the JWU-Rivier match at Pierce Stadium in East Providence, RI, to honor those who were lost in the plane crashes at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in the crash of the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 in Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. The National Patriots Day ceremony then took time to honor the members of the military who served the nation post 9-11.
U.S. Army Sergeant Michael Zompa of Smithfield, Rhode Island, a recipient of the Bronze Star during his service in Iraq, presented an American flag that flew over the palace of former dictator Saddam Hussein following his ouster. Members of both teams held the flag during the playing of the National Anthem to climax the ceremony.
