Cadets Compete for GNAC Title Against Monks in Men's Soccer Championship
The #2 seed, St. Joseph's will host #4 Norwich University in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship at Westerlea Way Field in a 2:00 PM kickoff on Saturday November 5th.
The SJC men’s soccer team, under the guidance of third-year Head Coach Steve Babineau, carries a 13-5 overall record - including a 7-3 mark versus conference opponents - into the GNAC Championship match. Head Coach Kyle Dezotell, now in his sixth year at the helm for Norwich, has guided the Cadets to an 11-8 overall record with a 6-4 in-conference tally.
Saint Joseph’s defeated #7 Suffolk University, 3-0, in the quarterfinals and #6 Emmanuel College, 4-1, in the semifinal round. Norwich tipped #5 Lasell College, 3-2 in double-overtime, in the quarters and upset top-seeded Albertus Magnus College, 1-0, in the semifinals to advance to the championship game.
The Monks tipped the Cadets, 2-1, earlier this year. In 2009, St. Joe’s won the conference crown and is making its third GNAC Championship appearance in the last four years. The Cadets have won four GNAC titles since joining the league in 1999 and will be looking to make their first trip back to the NCAA's since 2008 when NU beat Saint Joseph's (Maine) in the finals.
The GNAC championship match is an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
