GNAC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors: May 2, 2011

Kacey Abbriano (Norwich), Grace Fitzpatrick (Norwich) and Kellie Pickel (Norwich) have earned Great Northeast Athletic Conference’s Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Honors.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kacey Abbriano, Norwich, Jr., Hicksville, NY

Norwich’s Kacey Abbriano scored nine goals, three of which were free position goals, that guided the Cadets to their second consecutive GNAC Title. As the team captain for the Cadets, she has stepped up to be a constant threat to the opponents and average hat trick numbers in each postseason game. Abbriano collected 14 ground balls over the week and caused four turnovers in the championship game against Lasell.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Grace Fitzpatrick, Norwich, Fr., Falmouth, ME

Norwich’s rookie midfielder and GNAC Rookie of the Year, Grace Fitzpatrick, clearly demonstrated over the week how much that title was well-deserved, as Fitzpatrick was a major component in the Cadets success this season. Driving the team to back-to-back titles and scoring five goals in her first trip to the GNAC Championship game, she was a major threat to the Lasers. Scoring on all three of her free position shots, she also helped out defensively with two caused turnovers, three ground balls, and three draw controls.

GOALIE OF THE WEEK

Kellie Pickel, Norwich, Sr., Montpelier, VT

Norwich’s senior goalkeeper, Kellie Pickel, played two of the most important games of the season in net and was an active role in delivering the Cadets back-to-back Championship titles, standing in as the last line of defense. She made six saves in the semifinals, and followed up with five saves in the championship game. She also came off her line to pick up two ground balls, once in each contest.
