Gators Grab First GNAC Win, Defeat JWU 74-65

With the result, both teams find themselves at 4-9 on the season. Pine Manor improves to 1-2 in the GNAC, while JWU drops to 1-1.

Chestnut Hill, Mass. -- Junior Therline Dumeran (Cambridge, MA/Cambridge Rindge) and sophomore Tia Nelson (Rockport,MA/Rockport) each recorded a double-double and senior Phibe Pham (Boston, MA/Snowden) scored 13 points to help Pine Manor defeat Johnson & Wales University (JWU) on Saturday January 15 at Pine Manor Gymnasium. With the result, both teams find themselves at 4-9 on the season. Pine Manor improves to 1-2 in the GNAC, while JWU drops to 1-1.
Dumeran had game- highs in rebounds, 21, and points, 24, to
lead Pine Manor, while Nelson scored 22 points and pulled in 10
rebounds in the contest. Nelson set the pace early for Pine Manor,
scoring 17 of her 22 points in the first-half.
The teams battled back and forth throughout the first-half
with Pine Manor getting out to an early 17-12 lead just over 7
minutes into the game. However, JWU would respond with a 7-0 run to
take a 19-17 lead with 7:55 remaining in the first. JWU would hold
onto the led until the 1:30 mark of the first when Nelson hit her
third three-pointer of the half to give Pine Manor the 26-25 lead.
Nelson would then hit two more three-pointers in the final minute
of the half to give the Gators a 32-27 advantage at the
break.
Nelson would hit 6 three-pointers in the game, while Phibe
Pham also knocked down three three-pointers for the Gators. In all,
Pine Manor hit 10 three-pointers en route to the Gators first Great
Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) win of the season.
Pine Manor head coach Alex Gould was pleased with the result
and the effort given by his team on both ends of the floor.
“I’m really please at how we bounced back following the
last two games,” said Gould. We got off to a tough
start in the conference but our effort was great
today.”
“We also did a fantastic job on the glass,” said
Gould of the Gators, who edged JWU in rebounding, 52-49 in the
contest. Dumeran totaled 10 offensive rebounds alone for Pine
Manor, as aggressive interior play helped Pine Manor to hold the
lead throughout the second half.
Leading 32-27 at the half, Pine Manor would stretch the lead
to 45-32 following another three- pointer by Nelson at 14:05 of the
second-half. Pine Manor would hold leads of as many as 15 points
during the second, as JWU would get no closer than 69-63 with just
over a minute to play.
For JWU, sophomore Marina Millian (Chester,
NY/Monroe-Woodbury) had a team-high 14 points, while freshman Jenna
Juron (Burnt Hill, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake), 13 points, and
sophomore Ayla Walter (Mt. Pleasant, SC/Bishop England), 10
points, also finished in double figures.
Pine Manor will have Sunday off before the Gators head to
Simmons College on Monday, January 17, for a 5:30 p.m.
