On February 5, 2011, the Mount Ida softball team joined the Swab-A-Cheek Save-A-Life team at the Metro West Boys and Girls Club basketball league, for a different kind of challenge than they were used to. With the goal of saving lives of patients looking for a bone marrow or stem cell transplants, the Mount Ida girls came enforce to recruit parents and fans in attendance to join the bone marrow registry.
The team of 13 girls, along with their coach Katie Zuman, approached everyone entering the building and greeted them by asking if they wanted to save a life today. They were also involved in organizing the forms and kits so that they could be sent right out to the lab to be tested and entered into the registry.
The positive attitude of the Mount Ida team, made all the difference in trying to allay many individuals’ worries about being tested. By explaining just how easy the registration process is, requiring only a swab of the inside of the cheek, the girls registered a total of fifty-five people that day. Now they wait to hear about their very first match!
The Swab-A-Cheek Save-a-Life group would like to extend a huge thank you to the Mount Ida softball team and Coach Zuman. Because of their help, there are 55 more potential donors that could save a life.
