Alyssa Dunn and Annie Thompson Honored as Capitol One Academic All-Americans
Saint Joseph's College senior first baseman Alyssa Dunn has garnered College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/Capital One Softball Academic All-America® Second Team honors. Dunn, a Pre-Medicine major with a 3.87 GPA and four-year starter for the Monks' softball program, is the first individual in SJC Athletics history to receive an Academic All-America accolade. Dunn was listed on the Academic All-District Team three times during her career, as she claimed Third Team honors as a sophomore, Second Team accolades as a junior, and First Team mention this spring.
A two-sport athlete and four-year starter for the SJC field hockey and softball programs, Dunn has played in 241 athletic contests in her collegiate career. A proven winner, Dunn helped lead her teams to an impressive 178-74 (.706) combined record, including an otherworldly 98-20 (.831) mark in conference play. Her squads advanced to the conference tournament six times and played in four ECAC New England Regional Tournaments.
The Capital One Academic All-America® honor is the 22nd accolade of Dunn's brilliant two-sport career. She has collected 11 academic awards, including three National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Academic Team accolades and two GNAC All-Academic honors. Unquestionably one of the finest athletes at Saint Joseph's, Dunn – the 2011 SJC Athletics Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Co-Female Athlete of the Year - has collected five All-Conference awards and five All-Tournament honors in her career as well.
Dunn completed her athletic career on a high note, as she helped lead the SJC softball team to the program's first GNAC Championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearance this spring. In 47 starts for the Monks, Dunn hit .384 (58-151) with 28 runs, 11 doubles, six home runs and 34 RBI en route to earning the third All-Conference honor of her softball career.
In her career, Dunn batted .382 (191-500) with 78 runs, 44 doubles, 13 home runs and 123 RBI in 163 games. She finished her career ranked second in team history in games and hits, third in at bats and home runs, and fourth in doubles and RBI.
Simmons College senior shortstop Annie Thompson has also earned College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/Capital One Softball Academic All-America® Third Team honors. Thompson, an International Relations major with a 3.60 GPA and four-year starter for the Sharks' softball program has had quite a career and senior season.
The Capital One Academic All-America® honor is another accolade of Thompson's impressive softball career. She was named the 2011 GNAC Player of the Year, collected four all-conference and academic all-conference honors, and three National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-American awards. Additionally, she was named as the Simmons' Athlete of the Year and a NEISCA First Team selection this year.
Thompson was a key contributer in the Sharks' success this season, earning them a top regular season finish and a bid to the ECAC Tournament. She tallied a .576 overall batting average with an astonishing .610 conference average with 39 RBI in the lead-off position. The tri-captain manufactured a .848 slugging percentage with 72 hits, and led the GNAC in batting average, runs scored, hits, and on base percentage. Thompson concluded the season ranked fourth in NCAA D.III for batting average but previously held the number one spot. Additionally, she anchored the Sharks defense at shortstop, starting in all 36 games while only committing seven errors.
Athletes are selected for academic acclaim by CoSIDA members and the District 1 area includes colleges and universities in New York and New England. The College Division encompasses all DII and DIII institutions in those states.
