WBCA Pink Zone Games Tip Off Tomorrow
This marks the third year that the member institutions of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference will participate in the WBCA Pink Zone initiative. The WBCA Pink Zone is an effort produced by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to help in raising breast cancer awareness on the basketball court, in school communities, and in their cities across the globe.
The GNAC has been an active participant and supporter of the WBCA Pink Zone since 2008, and with a 100% participation rate amongst the schools. Last year, in 2010, the GNAC effort raised over $1,900 from the 13 GNAC institutions, which was donated primarily to the Kay Yow Fund with a few other cancer research organizations receiving some of the proceeds. The GNAC institutions raised money and awareness in a variety of ways, including inviting breast cancer survivors to games, wearing pink shooting shirts, asking fans to wear pink clothing, collecting gate proceeds and raffling off prizes.
The WBCA PinkZone was established in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, at their schools and throughout their communities. Former North Carolina State University head women’s basketball coach, the late Kay Yow, was the means behind the idea after she developed a third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006 and passed away in January 2009. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund is the WBCA’s charity of choice in addition with The V Foundation.
Since the inception of the WBCA Pink Zone in 2007, nearly $3.3
Million has been raised; the message has reached close to 2.7
Million fans, and has brought communities together to produce over
4,700 participants.
