Lasell Introduces New Mascot, New Logos, and New Website
Newton, Mass- For ten years since becoming a member of the NCAA, the Lasers have won ten conference championships, and earned 16 post-season berths, but all the while lacked one very important aspect in the department- a mascot. On March 25, 2009, the Lasell College Athletic Department proudly introduced a brand new mascot, “Boomer the Torchbearer”, to represent Lasell’s long history with light imagery.
For more than a year, a special committee made up of athletic department staff, faculty representatives, administration, and students worked collectively to create Boomer, who has laser-like eyes, and a dark blue muscled physique. Boomer was introduced by President Michael Alexander in a special torchlight parade ceremony, in front of faculty, staff, students, and of course, the athletes. The reception was complete with a slideshow presentation of the Lasers deep history of torchlight, from which the Lasers achieved their name.
Along with the mascot, the committee was also responsible for creating new logos to embody the Lasers, which incorporate Boomer and the torch.
In addition, the Athletic Department also worked in conjunction with PrestoSports to create an entirely new website to showcase all the exciting new additions to the department. The website went live on April 1st, at laserpride.lasell.edu.
The website includes a complete redesign along with interactive elements such as videos, polls, and live updated standings and results. Also included on laserpride.lasell.edu are full photo galleries, an athlete spotlight, Lasers’ updates, and much, much more.
Lasell is the fourth Great Northeast Athletic Conference member to partner with PrestoSports, who also produced the websites for the GNAC, the NAC, the NECVA, and the Pilgrim League, all conferences to which Lasell belongs.
Keep a lookout for Boomer the Torchbearer, who will attend athletic events, carrying a special torch and will wear the number 51 – commemorating the college’s founding year, 1851.
