2012-2013 Internships. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference seeks qualified applicants unique and exciting internships. These positions will provide the intern the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the management and operation of an NCAA DIII athletic conference. The internships are part time and will be headquartered in Boston. Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree and a sincere desire to enter college athletics administration.
The GNAC internships are in these five distinctive areas of concentration but they can be combined:
1) SID – Assisting with and learning about Statcrew, website updating and all conference voting.
2) Special Events – Community Clinics, Pink Zone, Passionate Purple, 2012 PDS and SAAC
3) Championships- Review and update the Championship Handbook. Assist with organizing championships and all-conference awards; assist with the organization and administration of the one day championships in Golf, XC and Swimming
4) Communications & Public Relations- Write stories for and update the GNAC website, develop and distribute press releases, solicit nominations for and promote awards such as the GNAC Woman of the Year and Sportsmanship awards, work with the innovative GNAC Correspondent’s program
5. Marketing - Corporate sponsors, website sponsors, equipment contracts and the GNAC Hall of Fame.
The interns will also serve as the “Commissioner's Kitchen Cabinet”. Brainstorming, advising and recommending conference wide initiatives on issues of pertinence to student athletes such as; Social Networking, Sportsmanship, Drugs and Alcohol, Depression and other illnesses effecting student athletes.
Although these are unpaid internships the non-monetary benefits include:
- Intern will gain meaningful experience by working with and learning from 200+ professionals at the 14 GNAC schools, plus GNAC partners i.e. NCAA, ECAC, 44 other DIII conferences, officials, corporate, community.

Summary:

Functions: Manages the development of new athletic
programs and the maintenance of existing programs in compliance
with the athletic governing body regulations and within university
budget parameters
-Fosters the execution and implementation of programs to create a
positive student co-curricular experience
-Approves and supervises the creation and implementation of
intramural, sports club and/or recreational athletic programs
-Oversees the management of campus athletic facilities including
scheduling and maintenance
-Secures appropriate locations for on and off campus athletic
programs
-Coordinates game preparations with athletic coaches and staff to
provide a safe and exciting game day experience for athletes and
fans
-Assists with fundraising initiatives
-Serves as the functional lead to facilitate and support
institutional athletic policy and program development
-Prepares and monitors the departmental budget
-Supervises and develops the department staff, facilitating
professional opportunities to improve individual capability and
managing performance against job accountabilities, department goals
and established university, campus and department policies and
procedures
-Supervises and manages student employees, as necessary, to
enhance their academic and professional development

Assistant Commissioner
The GNAC seeks qualified applicants for the intern
position of Assistant
Commissioner. This position will provide the
intern the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the
management of the day-to-day operations of a college athletic
conference. Under the guidance of the Commissioner, the Assistant
Commissioner will be assigned the following responsibilities:
- Coordinate the 2012 GNAC Professional Development Seminar (PDS) for 200 attendees including coaches, assistants, AD’s, SID’s, ATC’s, Deans of Students and Presidents.
- Conference SAAC coordinator. Work with GNAC students their advisors and the GNAC National SAAC representative to lead the GNAC SAAC.
- Sports Information and Media Relations. Learn Statcrew and the GNAC’s Presto web page to provide assistance as requested by the Director of Media Relations.
- Championships and awards. Assist the commissioner in overseeing conference championships and playoffs. Also oversee the GNAC Commissioner’s Cup Award program, NCAA and GNAC Sportsman of the Year Award, NCAA and GNAC Woman of the Year Award and the GNAC Institutional Sportsmanship Award.
- Oversee the GNAC men’s golf tournament
- Assist the commissioner with new NCAA legislation and rule updates
- Community. Coordinate a community based coaching clinics featuring GNAC coaches and the Brian Honan 5K.
- The intern will coordinate the 2012 GNAC Hall of Fame nominations and induction
- Supervise, lead and work with unpaid specialists assisting with conference projects
- Organize the annual staff retreat
- Chair GNAC Women’s Soccer committee
- Additional Duties/Projects to be assigned by the Commissioner.
Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree required and a
Master’s degree in Sports Administration preferred along with
a sincere desire to enter college athletics administration.
Preferred experience in media relations, desktop publishing,
website management, knowledge of StatCrew, and general computer
knowledge. Strong writing, communication, organizational and
multitasking skills, and a working knowledge of intercollegiate
athletics are preferred. A driver’s license is required as
well as the ability to travel to the NCAA Convention in San
Antonio, DIIICA meetings in Atlanta and Emerging Leaders Conference
in Indianapolis.
This position reports to and is evaluated by the conference
Commissioner. The office will be based in Boston, Massachusetts.
Stipend will be $5,000 per year plus travel expenses. Start date is
June
1st
The GNAC is an NCAA Division III conference of 14 institutions: Anna Maria College (Paxton MA); Albertus Magnus College (New Haven, CT); Emerson College (Boston, MA); Emmanuel College (Boston); Johnson & Wales University (Providence, RI); Lasell College (Newton); Mount Ida College (Newton); Norwich University (Northfield, VT); Pine Manor College (Chestnut Hill, MA); Rivier College (Nashua, NH); Saint Joseph College (West Hartford, CT); Saint Joseph’s of Maine; Simmons College (Boston); Suffolk University (Boston). In 2012-2013 the GNAC will sponsor championships in 17 sports for men and women. Becker College, Daniel Webster College, Regis College, Husson College, Elms College, University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Rhode Island College, University of Southern Maine and Worcester State College are associate members. The GNAC also enjoys outstanding professional partnerships with Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine Division, Doubletree Hotels, Fenway Printers, New Balance, Reading Trophy and Presto Sports.
