GNAC Softball Powers JWU, Suffolk Garner NFCA Academic Team Top-10 Recognition

WINTHROP, Mass. – Johnson & Wales University (RI) was ranked second and Suffolk University came in at No. 10 in all of NCAA Division III as the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) announced its Easton/NFCA Academic Team Top-10 and Scholar-Athlete accolades on Wednesday. 

The rankings recognize the academic prowess of softball teams across seven membership divisions with 6,280 student-athletes across all divisions being honored for achieving a 3.5 grade point average or higher in 2017-18.  

JWU posted a 3.270 team GPA, behind only Otterbein, while Suffolk tied with Ithaca (3.596) for 10th overall. Lasell College checked in at No. 21 and Simmons College was No. 54. 

From JWU, 19 student-athletes were selected as 2017-18 Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar-Athletes, and Suffolk had nine honorees. Lasell and Simmons had 11 and 10 scholar-athletes, respectively, while the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) had nine honorees among the 2017-18 NFCA Scholar-Athletes. 

The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) is an NCAA Division III association made up of 13 member institutions and over 3,000 student-athletes across the New England region. Founded in 1995, the GNAC annually sponsors and administers 20 championships, while balancing academic integrity, athletic opportunity and community involvement in an effort to enhance the student-athlete experience.
