As a native of Hull, Massachusetts, undersized forward Kathy Andrade did not have to travel too far when she decided to start her collegiate basketball career at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts.
Kathy Andrade, set to graduate in 2011 with a Bachelors degree in Broadcast Journalism, has achieved something that only one other athlete has been able to in the school’s history:
Surpass 1,000 points scored.
Standing at a mere 5-foot-6-inches, Kathy Andrade’s achievement is something to be impressed with. As Emerson’s head coach for the Women’s basketball team, Bill Gould discussed just how impressive scoring 1,000 points really is.
“Kathy is only the 2nd female player to score 1,000 points here at Emerson and for a someone who is a post player at barely 5’6” it truly is remarkable that she has been able to do what she has done.”
Coach Gould continued just how Andrade’s talents were evident to not just her teammates, but also their opponents.
“Almost every game we play, the opposing coach tells me how tough she is and how much they would love to have a kid like that and I just smile because I figured that out after the first game of her freshman year.”
Gould has witnessed Andrade’s development as a player from day one as he has coached her all four years of her time at Emerson.
“[She] has been a huge asset to me personally as she is the only player that I have coached all four of the years...She has really bought into the system and has been the one that has passed along the message to the younger players.”
Andrade’s final yeat at Emerson is coming to an end and the stellar athlete has left quite the impression. As a senior captain, Kathy had the responsibility to not only set an example for the young team but also to play at the elevated level that she has been playing in the last three years.
“Her work ethic is immense and she is a great leader both verbally and by example.” Coach Gould discussed, “ With the young team that we have this year, Kathy’s impact has been even more dramatic than it otherwise might have been for the average senior captain and that has helped me a tremendously.”
Overall the Emerson Women’s basketball team finished with a 5-11 record and was 3-1 in conference play. Andrade was the Lions’ second leading scorer with an average of 11.5 points a game, named to the 2010 GNAC All-Conference Third Team and was also named the GNAC Player of the Week earlier in the season.
The Great Northeast Athletic Conference congratulates Kathy Andrade for her achievement in scoring 1,000 points in her four-year career as a part of the Emerson Women’s basketball team.
